Vegan food: good for you, good for the planet

From riverdalepress.com

To the editor,

A newly FDA-approved cholesterol drug is expected to augment statins instead of replacing them. But why take cholesterol medications when you can eat tasty vegan foods to reduce your cholesterol and other health problems?

Vegan foods are cholesterol-free, generally low in saturated fat and rich in fibre and other nutrients. They taste great too, and they can reduce your risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes and other health problems.

Vegan foods are tastier than cholesterol medications, and they’re also generally low in saturated fat and high in fibre, complex carbohydrates and other nutrients. Study after study has shown that if you need to lower your cholesterol, you should pass on red and white meat and eat green foods instead — healthy, humane, environmentally friendly vegan food, that’s it.

Going vegan is also the best way to help animals and make environmentally friendly choices. Each vegan could spare hundreds of animals every year, and research shows that vegans are responsible for 75 percent less greenhouse gas than non-vegans. So instead of drugs, try healthy vegan foods.
