Future Food Quick Bites: Beyond Meat x Taco Bell, Crowdfunding Galore & Marigold Protein

From greenqueen.com.hk

By Anay Mridul

New products and launches

Fast-food giant Taco Bell has teased a new partnership with vegan giant Beyond Meat to create a new plant-based protein that will be tested within this year. The chain said it chose the latter due to its track record of attracting young consumers. They previously tested a meat-free carne asada steak quesadilla and tacos offered at price parity.

US vitamins brand Perelel has launched Daily Resilience Complex, a new daily supplement featuring TurtleTree‘s precision-fermented lactoferrin ingredient, LF+. It isn’t vegan, however, since the powder also contains bovine collagen.

In time for grilling season, whole-food brand Actual Veggies has rolled out a 10-pack of its vegan black bean burger at most Costco locations across the US.

Likewise, whole-cut plant-based meat pioneer Chunk Foods has gained a listing at Whole Foods Market across the Northeast for its steak filet, pulled steak and a new Moroccan Cubes SKU with 19g of protein.

Speaking of vegan steak, Dutch start-up Rival Foods‘s clean-label alternative has landed in its home country. The pulled beef is available in 2kg packs for foodservice operators on InstockMarket, and contains 31g of protein per 100g.

Weeks after securing $2.3M in fresh funding, French vegan cheesemaker Jay&Joy has expanded its footprint through a listing at 400 new points of sale at German organic retailer Denns BioMarkt.

Fellow French company La Vie‘s plant-based ham, sandwiches and snacks are now being stocked at 180 TotalEnergies service stations across the country.

In more good news for France’s plant-based shoppers, a new fully vegan grocery store, Herbivores, has opened on Lyon’s Rue Pasteur street.

Singaporean bean-free start-up Prefer has brought its coffee alternative to Japan, launching an iced black coffee using its PreferRoast ingredient in collaboration with Tokyu Land, a member of local conglomerate Tokyu Group.

And in the UK, Shicken Foods has launched plant-based kofta kebabs into Costco stores. They feature 21g of protein per serving and are high in fibre.

Company and finance updates

Swedish pea milk start-up Sproud has achieved its lowest-ever average carbon footprint, reducing its emissions by 11.45% to reach 0.301kg of CO2e per litre of product. Moreover, annual sales hit a new record, growing by 28% to reach 74.9 million kronor ($8.1M), with volumes up by 33%.

Californian cultivated seafood start-up Finless Foods has opened a crowdfunding campaign on Republic, with a goal of securing $75,000. It has already entered the pre-market consultation process with the US Food and Drug Administration for its cultivated tuna, with approval expected in 2027.

Weeks after receiving $700,000 in seed funding, Danish mycelium meat maker Tempty Foods has kicked off a crowd investment round on Republic. It has already landed nearly all of its €355,000 ($415,000) target.

In more investment news, British eco material player Ponda has also launched a crowdfunding effort on Republic with the aim of raising €230,000 ($270,000) to build out its capacity and expand production of BioPuff, a bulrush-based alternative to goose down and polyester fibres.

Speaking of eco materials, Australia’s Uluu has moved into a new industrial facility in Henderson, Western Australia, which will allow it to scale up production of its seaweed-derived bioplastics. This follows a $10.5M investment round in November.

US industrial biotech start-up Fermeate has raised $2M in seed funding to advance its optogenetic control tech for precision-fermented products and accelerate price parity for them.

Belgian beanless coffee start-up Koppie has reached a major milestone in its scale-up efforts, producing 12 tonnes of its fermentation-derived alternative.

Climate advocacy group Madre Brava has closed its Thailand programme, according to its former director.

Policy, research and awards

Dutch start-up NoPalm Ingredients – which makes palm oil alternatives from food waste, yeast and fermentation – has been named as one of the four finalists of the 2026 Food Planet Prize.

Catering giant Sodexo has become the first employee restaurant chain in Poland to monitor the share of plant-based proteins on offer, with analysis using the Protein Tracker tool revealing that 30% of its 2024-25 protein portfolio was sourced from plants.

Two new studies by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine show that low-fat plant-based diets cut greenhouse gas emissions by 55-57% and cumulative energy demand by 44-55%.

study led by scientists at the University of Georgia suggests that dried marigold flowers – 40% of which end up wasted – show potential as a sustainable plant protein source, exhibiting high levels of glutamic and aspartic acids, greater heat stability than peas and chickpeas, and excellent emulsifying capacity.

Researchers at the University of Warwick have published the results of their meta-analysis of clinical trials involving 541 participants, finding that plant-based eaters were associated with significantly lower levels of C-reactive protein – a widely used marker of systemic inflammation – than omnivores.

Finally, in Veganuary‘s 2026 participant survey, a third (32%) of those who weren’t vegan before said they planned to continue following a plant-based diet after the monthlong campaign, while 79% intended to halve their intake of animal products.

What's New: Reese’s Keeps Coming With Vegan Options, Beyond’s Protein Drink, and Costco’s New Drop

From vegnews.com

From a candlelit vegan wine bar to a new cookbook from a beloved brand, here’s what’s new in plant-based food this week

We're only a few weeks into 2026, and it’s already shaping up to be an exciting year for vegan food. Peet’s Coffee has added pistachio milk to its winter menu, Salt & Straw is offering a dairy-free ice cream cake, and Caribou Coffee has dropped its plant-based milk upcharge. Wins all around.

And the good news doesn’t stop there. This week, Beyond Meat surprised everyone with the announcement of a brand-new venture, and New York welcomed a new vegan restaurant we’re already drooling over. Keep reading for the full lowdown in this week’s food news.

Beyond steps into the functional beverage category with the launch of Beyond Immerse.

Beyond Meat has expanded into protein drinks

It’s been nearly a decade since Beyond Meat hit the market with its pioneering, juicy, meat-like bleeding burgers. Since then, it has sold millions of patties all over the world and expanded into new areas like vegan chicken and sausages. Now, rebranded as Beyond, it’s venturing into an entirely new space: protein drinks.

The California-based brand recently revealed Beyond Immerse, a new line of beverages that are packed with protein, as well as fibre, antioxidants, and electrolytes. The beverages will initially be available in three flavours—Peach Mango, Lemon Lime, and Orange Tangerine—and are available to purchase directly from the Beyond Test Kitchen.

“With Beyond Immerse, we are bringing our pioneering expertise in unlocking the power of plants to a functional beverage line,” said CEO and founder Ethan Brown. “Beyond Immerse has been specially and carefully designed to provide nutrients that are critical to muscle health, gut health, and immune function, so that whatever the goal is, consumers can go Beyond.”

Reese’s new pretzel bites are a snackable take on classic peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. | Reese’s

Reese’s just launched a new vegan-friendly snack

We were very excited to cover the recent news that Reese’s vegan-friendly Oreos are now a permanent fixture on grocery store shelves. And we’re equally as excited to reveal that the vegan-friendly snacks just keep coming from the iconic peanut butter cup brand.

Reese’s has just dropped new limited-edition strawberry peanut butter-filled pretzels, and they’re completely animal-free. Keep an eye out next time you’re grocery shopping to give them a taste test — they’ve recently been spotted in Target.

Midwest Costco customers can now find Daily Harvest’s new product in stores.

First-ever vegan frozen protein oat bowls land in Costco

Daily Harvest is shifting away from its delivery-only business model. The brand has expanded into retail and recently launched its first frozen protein oat bowls at Costco stores in the Midwest. Made with organic fruits, the Apple Cinnamon Protein Oat Bowl is packed with 16 grams of protein and seven grams of fibre, making it the first product of its kind in the frozen food space. While overnight oats are simple enough to make at home, this launch makes high-fibre mornings easier than ever.

Long Count promises aged wines and delicious vegan dishes built around focaccia. | Facebook

New York just got a new vegan wine and focaccia bar

As if we needed another reason to love New York, vegan hospitality group Overthrow Hospitality has opened a new wine and focaccia bar called Long Count in the East Village. The intimate space—formerly home to the relocated Soda Club—features aged wines and inventive, fermentation-forward dishes like sourdough focaccia, papadam with salt and apple cider vinegar, and arancini topped with tempeh parmesan. All of the wines on the menu are at least 10 years old. Expect jazz and soul soundtracks, candlelit dining, and plenty of atmosphere. Count us in, Long Count.

Bitchin’ Sauce founder to release new vegan cookbook

Do you love Bitchin’ Sauce so much you wish you could have an endless supply at home? That dream could (sort of) become a reality. The brand’s founder, Starr Edwards, has released a new cookbook titled Sauced: 30 Totally Bitchin’ Bowls. The book was inspired by Edwards’ personal challenge to eat only Bitchin’ Bowls for 30 days. She loved the journey so much that she wanted to share it with everyone.

“Sauced is about trusting your instincts in the kitchen, adding a dash and a splash until you feel it in your soul, and discovering just how versatile and satisfying saucing all your meals can be,” said Edwards.

Violife mozzarella, cheddar, and colby jack shreds and slices are coming to Costco locations in the Northwest, Midwest, California, and Hawaii regions for a limited time

Starting this month, vegan brand Violife will offer bulk packs of vegan cheese in select locations of wholesale retailer Costco. For a limited time, Violife mozzarella shreds will be available at 30 locations in the Northwest region (which includes Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Wyoming) and will come in 1.65-pound packages for $8.99. The brand’s Epic Mature cheddar slices will be available in 30 locations in the Los Angeles area and Hawaii and will come in two, 15-slice re-closable packs for $9.49. Violife cheddar shreds will be available in 93 locations in the Midwest region (which includes Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indian, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Kentucky, South Dakota, and North Dakota). Later this fall, Costco locations in the Midwest will also offer Violife Colby Jack shreds.

“We’re very excited to continue expanding our plant-based cheese offerings in Costco stores,” Violife General Manager Andy Reichgut told VegNews. “Violife is the fastest growing and leading vegan cheese brand in the US because our delicious vegan cheeses melt, cook, and taste like dairy cheese. By partnering with Costco, we are able to introduce Violife products to more consumers whether they are vegan or just looking to add more plant-based foods into their favourite recipes or diet.”

Based in Thessalonica, Greece since the 1990s, Violife’s products are now available in more than 50 countries around the world. In 2018, the brand became widely available in the United States through Whole Foods Market. Violife has focused mainly on vegan cheese, offering products such as cheese blocks, slices, spreads, and wedges in various flavours from cheddar to feta. The brand has also offered a seasonal EPIC Christmas Platter featuring three Cheddar-flavoured blocks (mature, smoked, and garlic & chili). Earlier this month, Violife launched its first vegan butter, Vioblock, at Asda stores across the United Kingdom. Vioblock is a new direction for the vegan company as it looks to expand its product offerings further within the dairy alternatives category.

Vegan products at Costco

In recent years, Costco has expanded its selection of plant-based products, particularly in the vegan meat and cheese categories. Select locations of the chain offer bulk packs of Beyond Burgers, Beyond Sausages, and Beyond Meatballs; Ripple pea-based milk; Daiya cheese shreds and frozen dessert bars; and JUST Egg vegan liquid egg replacer.

Earlier this year, Costco rolled out new vegan breakfast sandwiches in the frozen aisle at locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, and the Southeast region (which includes stores in Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, and Puerto Rico). Made by vegan brand Alpha Foods, the Meatless Sausage, Plant Egg & Cheeze sandwich features vegan cheese by Greek brand Violife. In 2020, the brand also launched its Plant-Protein Crispy Chik’n Patties at Costco locations in the Southeast region, Los Angeles, Hawaii, and Texas.

Last month, Costco increased its vegan chicken offerings with new bulk packs of Field Roast Plant-Based Nuggets at more than 50 locations in the Los Angeles area. The wholesale retailer also expanded a take-and-bake vegan mac and cheese to nearly 100 locations in the Southeastern region of the country. The 32-ounce trays of vegan chef Ayinde Howell’s Original Mac & Yease are currently available in the prepared food section of stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Puerto Rico.

Vegan Mac and Cheese Is Now at Nearly 100 American Costco Stores

From vegnews.com

Chef Ayinde Howell’s vegan mac and cheese is now available at Costco stores in 11 more states in the US Southeastern Region

This weekend, wholesale retailer Costco is expanding a take-and-bake vegan mac and cheese to nearly 100 locations in the Southeastern region of the country. Chef Ayinde Howell’s Original Mac & Yease will be available in 32-ounce trays in the prepared foods section of stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Puerto Rico.

Howell—the former personal chef for musician India.Arie—developed the now-popular Mac & Yease recipe several years ago as a tribute to his great-grandmother Mary’s Sunday supper staple. “I’m so happy that we get a chance to get this recipe out and for it to be in the South—that’s where the idea originated. My great-grandmother, Mary Fluker, used to make baked mac and cheese in St. Stephens, Alabama, and my father loved it so much that when he went vegan before I was born, he wanted me to have it,” Howell told VegNews, “In my first cafe in Seattle 22 years ago, I started selling, cooking, and refining Mac & Yease to what it is today, and it will be available in the Mobile Costco in Alabama, where I used to spend summers. I feel like that’s [coming] full circle, if I ever saw one.”

VegNews.CostcoMacandCheese2

Vegan mac and cheese for everyone

In April, Costco tested Howell’s Jalapeño & Cheddar Mac & Yease at 30 locations in California and Hawaii. The jalapeño and cheddar flavour is the same recipe but with the added kick of fresh jalapeños. Howell says that the wholesale retailer expanded the meal option to more stores due to positive customer feedback. The Original Mac and Yease is available for a six-week limited time test period in the additional stores.

Though Costco was the first retailer to offer Howell’s Jalapeño & Cheddar Mac & Yease, this is not the first time the Original Mac & Yease has been available at stores. In 2018, Howell partnered with Whole Foods Market to bring his mac and cheese to the supermarket’s hot-food bar at 44 locations in the Southern Pacific region, which included California, Las Vegas, Arizona, Maui, and Oahu. In 2019, the option was expanded for a limited time at Whole Foods locations in Northern California.

More vegan options at Costco

In recent years, Costco has expanded its selection of plant-based products, particularly in the vegan meat and cheese category. Select locations of the chain offer bulk packs of Beyond Burgers, Beyond Sausages, and Beyond Meatballs; vegan chicken pieces made by vegan brand Daring Foods; pea-based milk by vegan brand Ripple; Daiya cheese shreds and frozen dessert bars; and JUST Egg vegan liquid egg replacer.

Additionally, in May, Costco rolled out new vegan breakfast sandwiches in the frozen aisle at Costco locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, and the Southeast region (which includes stores in Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, and Puerto Rico).
