Majority of US Meat-Eaters Open to Swapping Meat for Beans, Survey Finds

From vegconomist.com

Humane World for Animals has released a new survey conducted on its behalf by market research firm The Harris Poll, published one month after the launch of the organization’s Beansday campaign, which encourages consumers to replace meat with beans once a week.

The survey polled 2,003 US adults aged 18 and older, including 1,919 meat-eaters, between June 23 and 25, 2026.

Beans already a staple, with room for more

Of those surveyed, 95% said they generally eat beans. Black beans were the most popular variety at 46%, narrowly ahead of pinto beans at 41%. Nearly three in five meat-eaters (57%) said they would be willing to replace meat with beans at least once a week, and 62% said they were open to reducing their meat consumption overall.

Budget, health, and animal welfare weighed almost equally

About two-thirds of the meat-eaters surveyed said they had concerns about the effect of their meat consumption on household finances or food costs (67%), their own health (64%), and animal welfare (64%). Just under three in five (58%) cited environmental and climate impacts as a motivation. Among meat-eaters aged 18 to 34, animal welfare carried notably more weight as a reason for the weekly swap than it did among those aged 55 and older (27% versus 19%).

Karla Dumas, vice president of farm animal welfare at Humane World for Animals and a nutritionist, reads the findings as evidence of a more rounded approach to food decisions. According to Dumas, consumers now weigh budget, health, and animal welfare against one another with nearly equal importance. The Beansday campaign is built to turn those values into a repeatable weekly habit.

A campaign backed by a familiar face

Humane World for Animals launched the Beansday initiative in June with actor Kevin Bacon, who temporarily renamed himself Kevin “Bean” for a social media PSA. The campaign asks people to swap meat for bean dishes every Wednesday and points to the health, environmental, and animal welfare benefits of doing so.
