Premier Foods Launches McDougalls Vegan Jelly Amid Growing Demand for Low Sugar School Desserts

From vegconomist.com

British food manufacturer Premier Foods has launched a new range of vegan jelly with no added sugar under its McDougalls brand.

Introduced in response to rising demand for low-sugar school desserts, the jelly is available in four flavours — strawberry, raspberry, orange, and lime. It is free of gluten and all major allergens, and is compliant with the UK’s HFSS (high in fat, sugar, and salt) regulations.

The jelly is sold in 1.4kg packs, each of which produces 17 litres of jelly. It is said to be easy to prepare, and sets in just an hour.

According to LACA, a recent survey conducted by Premier Foods found that four in five children like jelly and 24% list it among their top five school desserts. Additionally, 54% say jelly is more exciting when mixed with fresh fruit.

Healthier and more inclusive

Jelly is traditionally made with gelatine, an animal-derived ingredient, but Premier Foods introduced its first vegan jelly last year. The product is claimed to be easier to prepare than regular jelly since it only requires the addition of boiling water, rather than a combination of boiling and cold water.

“Whether served on its own or with fresh fruit, our new range of jelly offers a simple, cost-effective way to add fun and flavour to school desserts, without compromising on nutrition,” said Louise Wagstaffe, senior culinary advisor at Premier Foods. “It offers an exciting opportunity for school caterers to bring jelly back in a healthier, more inclusive way.”

The new sugar-free jelly is available from all major UK catering and food service wholesalers, as well as in depot and online.
