Organic mushroom farm Urban Farm-It has launched gourmet Lion’s Mane mushrooms in Sainsbury’s stores nationwide.

Urban Farm-It has launched its fresh, hand-harvested Lion’s Mane mushrooms in selected Sainsbury’s stores nationwide, marking the first time this rare ingredient is available in a UK supermarket.

The Kent-based organic farm offers 200g punnets for £5, making this unique, UK-grown mushroom one of the most accessible for shoppers.

Elliot Webb, founder of Urban Farm-It, shared his excitement about the milestone in a statement sent to Vegan Food & Living: “We’re incredibly excited to launch our fresh UK-grown Lion’s Mane mushrooms in Sainsbury’s – a first for a UK supermarket.

“Bringing this unique ingredient to consumers across the country is a huge milestone for us.”

He added that the mushroom’s “meaty texture” makes it a great alternative to seafood and meat in plant-based cooking.

Grown in Kent, each mushroom is harvested at peak maturity to ensure optimal quality and flavour before being packed into recyclable cardboard punnets.

Lion’s Mane mushroom is known for its delicate flavour and naturally dense texture. It is often used in gourmet vegan recipes, served as plant-based steaks or in vegan seafood recipes, and has graced the menu of many vegan fine dining restaurants.

Urban Farm-It’s Lion’s Mane mushroom is much more than your average supermarket mushroom. Its fully recyclable packaging is beautifully designed, making it eye-catching with a premium feel.

To help customers make the most of this ingredient, the packaging features a QR code that leads to a specially curated digital recipe book.

The collection includes recipes from plant-based chefs, showcasing creative ways to prepare Lion’s Mane, from pressing it into a steak to shredding it for stroganoff and other dishes.

Beyond recipes, scanning the QR code gives shoppers a behind-the-scenes look at Urban Farm-It’s operations, along with information on the health benefits and culinary versatility of Lion’s Mane mushrooms.
