Nestlé Introduces New Plant-Based Fork

From onegreenplanet.org

Nestlé has recently introduced a unique product aimed at environmentally conscious consumers: a plant-based fork. This limited-edition, eco-friendly utensil is specifically designed for Maggi cups of noodles in India. The innovative fork is the result of a collaboration between Nestlé’s food science and packaging teams at their Indian facility and a local start-up. The two-piece, edible utensil is crafted from wheat flour and salt, embodying a significant stride toward reducing plastic waste.

Nestlé’s introduction of the plant-based fork aligns with its broader commitment to reduce or eliminate plastic use in packaging. The company is dedicated to simplifying packaging materials and expanding reusable and refillable systems whenever possible. Gerhard Niederreiter, head of Nestlé’s Institute of Packaging Sciences, emphasized the company’s dedication in a press release: “We continuously explore different types of alternative, sustainable packaging solutions that ensure food safety, consumer experience, and product taste and quality. In this case, our packaging experts developed a unique alternative fork built on our scientific expertise.”

Beyond the plant-based fork, Nestlé’s R&D department is actively piloting additional sustainable innovations. For instance, a patented paper scoop for adult milk powders is being tested in China. This innovative scoop features a flat, foldable design and a metal cap, eliminating the need for plastic in the packaging design.
