A Manchester venue has just been named one of the best vegan restaurants in the world for 2023.
The Allotment Vegan Eatery overlooking Manchester Cathedral landed in 28th position as part of an annual list revealing the best plant-based eateries. The 50 Best Vegan Restaurants in the World is compiled by global travel site, Big 7 Travel, and features restaurants on nearly every continent - from Mexico City's vegan foodie paradise to the plant-based haven of Berlin.
The Allotment has been winning rave reviews and a number of admirers since first opening on Lloyd Street five years ago, and last year it was named Best Vegetarian Restaurant in the North at a national awards ceremony. At the time, owner Anthony Sheridan spoke of how proud he was of the whole team for winning the Food Award title for a second year running.
A year ago, bosses made the move to a new site in a historic Manchester location. The restaurant can now be found next to the Mitre Hotel, with amazing views overlooking Manchester Cathedral. Based inside part of the 19th century Mitre building - one of Manchester’s oldest hotels - it boasts stylish interiors and an outdoor terrace ideal for al fresco dining.
The fully vegan restaurant, which is joined on the list by eateries including Mildreds in London and Cadence in New York City, was praised for its “use of fresh, locally-sourced ingredients that serve as the foundation of their extensive vegan menu”. The guide also said: “Allotment Vegan Eatery is a fantastic restaurant located in the heart of Manchester.
“If you’re in the mood for something extraordinary, they offer a 10-course tasting menu that will leave you with an unforgettable experience. But, if you’re after a classic comfort food, you must try their vegan Sunday roast that features a delicious cauliflower steak that rivals the traditional roast.”
(Image: Allotment)The fully vegan menu, which spans a wide range of small and large plates, includes signature cauliflower wings (£7), Greek-style tofu kebab (£6.50) and king oyster mushroom scallops (£7.50). Large plates, meanwhile, vary from jackfruit tacos (£15.50) and fennel risotto (£16) and ‘fish & chips’ (£16) served with minted peas, and homemade tartare sauce.
