Costa Coffee Introduces Vegan Whipped Cream Across UK

From vegconomist.com

High street coffee chain Costa Coffee has launched a dairy-free, vegan whipped cream across its UK stores. Vegan lovers of Costa can now indulge in its fancy cold and hot beverages without forgoing the extra creamy toppings.

“We’re delighted to confirm the launch of Light Whip, a new lighter alternative to cream, which is suitable for both vegetarians and vegans to enjoy,” a spokesperson for Costa Coffee told Plant Based News.

Plant-based options

The fastest-growing coffee shop chain in the UK, and a subsidiary of the Coca-Cola Company, Costa has gradually added vegan options over recent years. In 2021, the brand introduced the Vegan Bac’n Breakfast Bap nationwide with Irish brand Finnebrogue’s vegan bacon.

In December 2022, Costa revealed a festive vegan sandwich, the P’gs & Blankets Panini. The offer was followed by new launches, including Vegan Meatb’ll wrap or vegan Heart Emoji Gingerbread biscuit, and comebacks like the popular BBQ Chick’n Panini for Veganuary.

Recently, the coffee chain launched an initiative letting its customers switch to its “Ultimate Blend” alternative milk without paying extra until May 3.

“Costa has finally released their vegan whipped cream! I have tried it; it is a sweet cream, but really nice,” reads one comment on the Costa 2023 Drinks Update.

Protests for dairy farming cruelty

As the news for Costa’s vegan whipped cream spreads, Juliet Gellatley, founder & director of UK vegan campaigning charity Viva!, has been calling on the vegan community to hold protests outside Costa stores nationwide, starting on March 11.

Viva! recently investigated Home Farm, a dairy farm in Kent supplying Freshways, which provides milk for Costa Coffee. “The cruelty is typical of modern dairy farming – and that’s why we’re asking people to choose vegan instead of boycotting Costa,” Gellatley said.

“Across the country, Viva! campaigners, supporters, and activists will unite to educate the public about the reality of dairy and encourage them to swap to plant-based options,” says Viva!.
