Food options for vegans have improved dramatically in recent years. As more people recognise the health and environmental benefits of not eating meat, more innovative vegan food companies have sprung up to cater to this growing market. For this week’s Business Leader Top 12, we’ve looked at top vegan brands in the world.

Beyond Meat
Beyond Meat holds the title of the world’s most Googled vegan brand, with 422,000 searches on average each month, plus one for the search we did whilst writing this article.
The producer of plant-based meat substitutes, which also boasts of Microsoft Founder Bill Gates as an investor, was founded by Ethan Brown in 2009, with their initial products launching in the US in 2012.
With a revenue of $406.8m in 2020 and nearly 500 employees, Beyond Meat also has over one million followers on Instagram who check out some of the innovative vegan food creations that they post on there.
THIS™
Boasting of meat-free alternatives that are fortified with vitamin B12 and Iron, THIS™ has won numerous awards since it was launched in 2019, including Start-up of the Year at the 2020 Grocer Gold Awards.
Founded by Andy Shovel and Pete Sharman, two meat-lovers who astonishingly went from running a beef burger restaurant chain to launching one of the most lauded new vegan foods, THIS™ products are designed to properly work in fry ups, chicken pies and other meals where more traditional meat-alternatives have been criticised for falling short of the real thing in the past.
Gardein
Although there are lots of vegan brands offering plant-based alternatives to beef burgers and chicken pieces, less companies are renowned for their alternatives to fish. But not Gardein.
Gardein’s golden fishless fillets and crabless cakes have both received excellent reviews on the company’s website, although they also offer alternatives to chicken, turkey, beef and pork.
With 54,800 followers on Twitter and 166k on Instagram, this up and coming vegan brand is definitely one to look out for in the future.
Linda McCartney Foods
Founded in 1991 by the late wife of music icon and former Beatle, Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney Foods is one of the most recognisable celebrity brands in the UK, certainly within the world of food.
Although the firm has changed hands numerous times since its foundation and is currently owned by US firm Hain Celestial Group, it has just shy of a 100,000 followers on Instagram (97,200). Their product range, which mostly comes in 100% recyclable packaging, includes everything from meat-free pulled pork to vegetarian country pies.
JUST Egg
Plant-based egg product JUST Egg is not only a favourite of US singer Lizzo, it’s also the fourth most Googled vegan brand in the world, with 94,000 searches on average per month.
Made from plants and offering 5g of protein and no cholesterol, JUST Egg even offers ‘eggs’ that you can make in the toaster. If you’re not a fan of the industrialised egg system and are looking for an alternative, it might be time to give Just Egg a try.
Quorn
Famously endorsed by Mo Farah, the most successful British track athlete in modern Olympic Games history, other famous endorses of Quorn include British swimmer Adam Peaty.
The meat substitute comes in a variety of forms and is Googled nearly 500,000 times a year in the UK, making it the most Googled vegan brand in the country. It also tops the search charts in Finland and Malta.
Packed with protein, Quorn recently introduced carbon footprint calculations on their products, so you can see how much carbon was emitted in the creation of their alternative foods.
HIPPEAS
Vegan snack brand HIPPEAS offers an impressive selection of treats, including tortilla chips and puffs in a wide range of flavours, all of which are made using high-protein chickpeas and no artificial colours.
Considerably healthier than your standard bag of crisps, 18,000 monthly searches a month on Google makes HIPPEAS the seventh most Googled vegan brand in the world.
OWYN
Plant-based protein shake and powder brand OWYN is the most googled vegan brand in Angola and Ghana and with good reason; their allergen-friendly, 100% plant-based products come in weight management, standard protein and elite protein varieties to suit a wealth of workout needs.
Their products are also suitable for people with soy, dairy and gluten allergies. With no sugar alcohols or artificial ingredients present either, people with IBS should get on well with OWYN’s products too.
Oatly
On average, vegan brand Oatly receives 198,000 searches on Google each month, making it the second most Googled vegan brand. A lot of them undoubtedly come from Australia, Sweden and Indonesia, where the company that produces oat-based alternatives to milk, yoghurt and ice-cream is the top searched brand.
Founded in Sweden back in 1994, Oatly’s products include everything from chocolate oat milk and whippable creamy oats to strawberry oatgurt and vanilla custard – yummy!
Vivera
Vivera is another producer of meat alternatives, and one that can boast of numerous awards for their products. For example, their chicken schnitzel won the Innova Classic Award in 2020 and their shawarma was voted favourite at the Food Awards in 2020.
According to their website, Vivera is the third-largest plant-based food producer in Europe, and their other products include jumbo plant dogs, garlic kievs and Greek style kebabs, so there are a plethora of potential recipes for people to enjoy.
Follow Your Heart
Follow Your Heart is the company behind Veganaise, an egg-free substitute for mayonnaise that they started selling all the way back in 1977! Today, the company is the fifth-most Googled vegan brand in the world, boasting of 32,000 monthly searches on average.
Their dairy-free product range also includes mozzarella, ranch dressing, vegan eggs and cream cheese. Follow Your Heart’s Earth Island plant-based manufacturing facility has alco achieved Platinum Level Zero Waste, meaning over 98% of waste and has been diverted from landfills through recycling, composting, reduction, or reuse since 2016.
VBites
VBites have been pioneering plant-based food since 1993 and according to their website, they have had plenty of success along the way, including more than 20 international awards and 140 products sold in more than 10 countries.
The UK-based company, founded by Heather Mills, sells everything from gluten, soy and meat-free chicken goujons to vegan Mexican cheese and plant-based bacon.
