Warning over ‘vegan’ Macca’s hack on TikTok

From news.com.au/lifestyle

A fast food hack that claims to be suitable for vegans has gone viral on TikTok – but not everyone is happy with the McDonald’s alternative

A McDonald’s hack for vegans has gone viral online – but it has also prompted a warning from some who claim the two food items aren’t safe for those avoiding animal products.

TikTok user @carmenharris35 shared her “vegan Macca’s hack” in a video that’s since been viewed 239,000 times.

Carmen ordered a cheeseburger bun with sauce and pickles minus the cheese and meat, along with a hash brown which she placed in the middle as a patty.

The TikTok video got hundreds of comments, with people labelling it a “game changer” and delicious even if you weren’t vegan.

“I’m do this except order garden salad as the side and put it in as well as the hash brown,” one person wrote.

“I’m not vegan but I am vegetarian and I do this with a Big Mac,” another commented.

“Yum now I want one,” one person wrote.

“Add some barbecue sauce as well,” another person advised.

But some claimed the hack was “not completely vegan” and could contain ingredients like milk or egg.

“Not vegan, egg is used in hashbrown and milk in bread,” one person wrote.

“The pickles aren’t vegan,” another commenter claimed. “Some of the preservatives are derived from animals.”

“It’s not really vegan when staff put all sorts in those fryers (including bacon and chicken nuggets),” one commenter also wrote.

Are Macca’s hash browns vegan?

What is considered vegan can vary person to person – some consider food made or cooked in the same area as meat or dairy products not truly vegan, while others will take a more relaxed approach.

While McDonald’s does offer dietary alternatives, all of its food, including meat and dairy products, are made in the same area meaning they won’t fall under a strictly vegan definition.

A McDonald’s Australia spokesperson confirmed to news.com.au that their hash browns or cheeseburger buns “cannot be certified as vegan” but declined to say whether they contained dairy or eggs as some comments claimed.
