It’s official, 2020 is the year of the vegans. A survey conducted by Applewood comprised of over 2,000 participants has revealed that 20% of Brits will be serving an entirely vegan Christmas dinner this year.
This news comes shortly after Tesco revealed that veggie mains are set to be more popular than beef and lamb this Christmas – indicating a real change in the UK food landscape.
1 in 5 of those asked said they would only purchase vegan products for their Christmas dinner guests, even if only one of them was vegan. Moreover, a whopping 74% of participants said they would be ‘looking to buy plant-based alternatives to cheese’ for that quintessential post-dinner cheese board.
It seems that this year, more people than ever will be trying plant-based alternatives.
Good news for the planet
Senior Brand Manager for Applewood Vegan, Lisa Harrison, said: “Research shows that vegans and vegetarians look set to make up a quarter of the British population in 2025, and eating a vegan diet could be the ‘single biggest way’ to reduce our environmental impact on Earth.
This is demonstrated by research showing that a meat-based Christmas dinner emits 23.5kg of CO2 per 6-person household, compared to just 9.5kg of CO2 from a vegan Christmas dinner.
‘Surprised’
Harrison continued, “We were surprised by our survey results that show people are increasingly willing to forgo their traditional Christmas foodie treats for healthier alternatives even when it makes cooking vegan for the whole family.”
With such a wide array of vegan options for a plant-based Christmas, there’s no reason not to give it a go.
