Google searches for ‘vegan food near me’ skyrockets by over 2000%

From veganfoodandliving.com

Online card company Thortful analysed Google trends from October 2015 to October 2020, looking at various vegan-related searches.

They reported that searches for the term had surged by a massive 2,100% over the time period, while ‘food delivery vegan’ was up by 450%.

It seems that the UK lockdown has played a role, as from March searches for ‘vegan food delivery near me’ increased by 500%, with ‘vegan takeaway food’ up by 450%.

Major growth on a global scale

Researchers also determined which countries have seen the biggest increase in interest for vegan food, and the top five were: Singapore, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland.

Terms seeing major growth on a global scale included ‘vegan food near me’ (2,000%), ‘vegan café near me’ (1,500%), and ‘vegan food options near me’ (1,250%).

‘Expanding our horizons’

“It’s exciting to see that we’re expanding our horizons in terms of the food we are eating,” thortful.com said.

“Whilst the benefits to the environment of eating vegan food are now widely known, it seems our appetite for these types of food are also increasing.”

Supermarket vegans

Supermarkets have also seen increases in vegan searches on their websites. For example, Waitrose reported a massive 759% surge in searches for ‘vegan bacon’. The high-end retailer has also seen sales of plant-based food increase by 30% year on year, with products such as vegan mince up by 150% and oat milk up by 113%.

Charlotte McCarthy, Waitrose’s Vegan Buyer told The Telegraph: “In recent months we’ve seen that customers have become more adventurous thanks to spending more time at home.

“Vegan ingredients have been leading the way in the last few months.”
