Budapest hosted Europe’s largest vegan-focused gathering on November 22, 2025, attracting more than 1,000 attendees. The inaugural Vegan Summit Budapest, organized by the non-profit Empathy Story, was held in celebration of World Vegan Month and sought to foster dialogue between plant-based advocates, businesses, and the public.

The event featured a variety of activities, including a major awards ceremony, a speaker line-up of prominent figures, and showcases from nearly 40 plant-based brands. It was described as a turning point in Hungary’s growing vegan movement, with a broad spectrum of attendees, ranging from committed vegans to those simply curious about the lifestyle.

“Has the vegan movement peaked?”

The Summit aimed to address key issues surrounding veganism, including its public perception and challenges. One of the first panels tackled the question, “Has the vegan movement peaked?” Moderated by Raul Vida, the panel included influencer Zsófia Rimóczi, actress Panka Kovács, and Puskás-Dallos.

The speakers discussed the apparent slowdown in the movement, noting the closure of vegan restaurants and the rise of ex-vegans, but they expressed optimism. The consensus was that veganism has not lost its momentum but requires more inclusive communication and a positive public image to continue growing.

Debunking vegan myths

Throughout the day, experts delivered talks debunking various misconceptions surrounding veganism. Speakers included doctors, activists, chefs, and actors, who covered a range of topics from the health benefits of a plant-based diet to the environmental impact of food choices. Notable speakers included Dr. Richárd Schwab, a gastroenterology specialist, and Kristóf Steiner, a well-known vegan advocate.

The Summit also served a charitable purpose. For each ticket sold, 500 HUF (approximately 1.5 USD) was donated to the Malacvédő Foundation, an organization dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned piglets. The initiative raised a total of 500,000 HUF (about 1,520 USD).

An awards ceremony honoured individuals and organizations contributing to the vegan movement. The winners, chosen through public voting and jury deliberations, included Gábor Tóth as Vegan Professional of the Year, Szabolcs Beda as Vegan Athlete of the Year, and Kristóf Steiner as Vegan Ambassador of the Year.

Symbolic timing for vegan awareness

Nearly 40 brands participated in the Summit, offering products and services aligned with sustainability and ethical consumerism. Companies like Lidl Hungary, Rossmann, and Lush showcased their plant-based products and engaged with attendees through tastings and product demos.

The timing of the event, which coincided with World Vegan Day, was symbolic for organizers, who hope to increase awareness of veganism in Hungary. Enikő Tóth, the Event Director, stated, “The overwhelming interest shows a clear need for an elegant, high-quality event where people can meaningfully connect with veganism. This was just the beginning.”
