South Africa: Vegan pizzas supreme for International Pizza Day

From suidkaapforum.com

Today, it remains one of the most consumed foods worldwide, available in some form or another in almost any country, with over five billion sold every year and an estimated 350 slices eaten every second of the day

From its origins in the Roman world to its global popularity and prevalence, pizza has been recognised on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2017.

Today, it remains one of the most consumed foods worldwide, available in some form or another in almost any country, with over five billion sold every year and an estimated 350 slices eaten every second of the day.

Flatbread variants throughout history are as ancient as agrarian culture itself, and as numerous as the peoples who had reliable access to grains - having been consumed in old Egypt, Rome, Persia and Greece - while the Italians are credited as the people who invented the modern iteration of the pizza.

Tomatoes, the basic and quintessential pizza ingredient, often in marinara sauce form, may surprise some as only having made its way to Europe from South America in the 15th Century onwards during a period known as the Columbian Exchange

Pineapple with its toothsome and sharp flavour profile - also a New World crop - remains the most fiercely debated inclusion on the baked floury disk - with Hawaiian pizza, in a quirk of odd culinary lineage, having been invented in Canada by a Greek restaurateur who was inspired by the sweet & sour taste of certain Asian cuisines, which today features as the highest-selling pizza option in Australia.

They've even had a special menu for Veganuary - an annual campaign supporting a month of plant-based eating every January.

Col’Cacchio is similarly available around South Africa and has several great vegan pizzas and other vegan menu options.
