Followfood Launches New Vegan Products Following 50% YOY Growth of Vegan Sales

From vegconomist.com

Germany’s followfood, a sustainable food pioneer with a portfolio of more than 150 products, including traditional seafood, fish and meat alternatives, and vegetarian and vegan products made with traceable ingredients through a tracking code, says it recorded growth of over 20%, both in seafood and plant-based products, in the first four months of 2024.

Jürg Knoll, the company’s co-founder and CEO, told Lebensmittel Praxis that its plant-based sales had grown by over 50% compared to the previous year despite the challenging economic environment.

This year, followfood has expanded its portfolio with 20 organic innovations, two-thirds plant-based, to fuel growth. The company expects a turnover between €75 and €80 million in 2024, after two years of overall slower sales.

The new products include four types of chips, vegan chocolates, and two pea-based vegan tuna alternatives called Tunvisch, that are already available. The NPDs feature an apple pulp in Demeter quality, a vegan salami made with spelt, vegan noodle soup, a vegan bolognese sauce, and a beluga lentil stew, among others. These join the existing plant-based portfolio which includes pizzas, soups and sauces, falafels, burgers, and ready meals.

Sustainably delicious and “modern”

Founded in 2000 under the name Fish & More GmbH by Jürg Knoll and Harri Butsch, the company pivoted in 2007 to prioritize sustainable and transparent food production, rebranding itself as followfish.

Initially focusing on importing frozen fish into Germany, introducing a tracking code that comprehensively disclosed their fish products’ origin, producers, and production channels to customers marked a significant milestone. Followfish quickly became a popular frozen fish brand due to its commitment to sustainability and transparency.

Building on the brand’s success, Knoll and Butsch launched Follow Food, expanding their vision to save soil through sustainable agriculture. The company now offers over 150 sustainable frozen, canned, and fresh products and serves over 3 million customers.

Followfood’s commitment to sustainability and quality has earned it numerous awards and recognitions, including multiple German Sustainability Awards and Green Brand Awards.

The company, headquartered near Lake Constance, mainly delivers to central warehouses and wholesalers. However, its products can be found throughout Germany in organic specialist shops and supermarkets, including Denn’s, Alnatura, Rewe, Edeka, tegut, and dm. Some products are available in Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

“We are convinced and see from our figures that good, sustainably delicious and modern products are also well consumed in this crisis. A clear strategy and the radical focus on exemplary sustainable supply chains are values that are worth maintaining, especially in difficult times. This can clearly be deduced from the positive business development,” Knoll told Lebensmittel Praxis.
