As Vegan Society celebrates its Vegan Trademark turning 32, we look back at its legendary achievements
This Spring, the Vegan Trademark celebrates its 32nd anniversary and there’s plenty to celebrate.
Launched in 1990 by The Vegan Society (who also coined the term ‘vegan’), it was the first vegan labelling scheme of its kind.
The Vegan Trademark gives both brands and consumers the confidence that a product is free from animal ingredients and testing.
From registering one humble plant milk back in 1990, it has now reached an impressive 60,000 certified products!

The record was broken when Smurfit Kappa became the first packaging company in the world to register with the certification.
Their corrugated products, produced at their Markham Vale site in the UK, are both vegan and environmentally friendly.
Further to this, the Vegan Trademark team announced an ongoing partnership with Smurfit Kappa that they hope will encourage current trademark holders to utilise the vegan verified packaging options.
The most recognised and trusted vegan labelling scheme
Research by the Vegan Society shows over 95% of vegans and vegetarians look for independent vegan verification on food and drink items, while a 2021 survey confirmed the Vegan Trademark is the most recognised and trusted vegan labelling scheme, now used for 60,000 products worldwide, including cosmetics, clothing, food, drink, household items, and many more.
