The vegan Plant Bar will go on sale in Sainsbury's
Cadbury is to launch its first vegan Plant Bar - made with almond paste instead of milk as well as '100 per cent sustainably sourced cocoa'.
The new bar - which is said to have 'the smoothness and a similar taste to Cadbury Dairy Milk with a hint of nuttiness' has been developed by owner Mondelēz International’s Global Centre of Excellence for Chocolate Research and Development in Bournville.
Wrapped in '100 per cent plant-based packaging', the Plant Bar will go on sale nationwide in November through Sainsbury's before being rolled out to other retailers in the New Year with a choice of two flavours including Salted Caramel.
Researchers have spent two years developing the bar - which is longer than it took scientists to create the vaccines to fight Covid-19.
The recommended retail price for Plant Bar will be £2.50 for a 90g bar, more than double the typical price for a 110g bar of Dairy Milk, but in line with other products made from non-dairy.
Sainsbury's is currently advertising a 110g bar of Dairy Milk online for £1 ('50p off') at 91p per 100g, while the Tesco price is 98p (89p / 100g) and Aldi quotes 89.5p per 100g.

What is Plant Bar?
The new chocolate has been made by replacing milk with almond paste but sources say it will 'still deliver the creamy taste you expect from Cadbury'.
The bar, which has been registered by the Vegan Society, will be released with two flavours to choose from - Smooth Chocolate and Smooth Chocolate with Salted Caramel pieces.
The '100 per cent plant-based packaging' has been created using 'certified bio-sourced plastics made from renewable sources'.
Cadbury is also investing in recycled soft plastic packaging for its Dairy Milk tablet bars sold in the UK and Ireland.
Other Cadbury developments In recent years have included making Cadbury Dairy Milk with 30% less sugar as well as ‘30% less sugar’ variants of Maynards Bassetts hero products, Wine Gums and Jelly Babies, and a ‘40% less sugar’ line extension on BelVita.
What they say
Louise Stigant, Mondelēz International's UK Managing Director, said: "With 500,000 participants in this year's Veganuary - double the number of participants from the year before - the increasing public appetite for varied snacking options and plant-based alternatives has never been more apparent.
"At Mondelez, evolving consumer demands have long informed our ambition to provide a wide range of products that work for everyone and the new Cadbury Plant Bar range is the latest stop on that journey."
Ericka Durgahee, Vegan Trademark Marketing Manager, Vegan Society, said: “As we approach World Vegan Day on November 1, the Vegan Society is thrilled that anyone who misses Cadbury chocolate as a vegan can now enjoy their favourite delicious chocolate bar without the use of animal products.
"We know how hard Mondelēz has worked to bring this bar to life and give more options to everyone. We look forward to trying them when they launch!”
Two centuries of history
The first Cadbury grocer's shop was opened at 93 Bull Street in Birmingham in 1824.
Cadbury Dairy Milk was launched in 1905 and every bar still includes "a glass and a half of fresh milk" sourced from farmers in Britain and Ireland.
Kraft bought Cadbury in March 2010, but later split into two.
Its grocery business became Kraft Foods Group before becoming Kraft Heinz Co when later bought by Heinz.
The division saw Cadbury became a subsidiary of global giant Mondelēz International from October 2012.
Its new parent company's net revenues in 2020 were worth almost £20 billion with products including OREO, belVita and LU biscuits; Cadbury Dairy Milk, Milka and Toblerone chocolate; Sour Patch Kids candy and Trident gum.
