Newcastle UK vegan pie makers Magpye move into city's Grainger Market

Chris and Sarah Fryer started Magpye two years ago in a converted horse box trailer and now have their own deli at the historic market

A Newcastle vegan pie company that started life in a converted horse box has opened its first shop at Newcastle’s Grainger Market.

Chris and Sarah Fryer first launched Magpye in 2019, selling luxury vegan pie, mash and mushy peas from a rebranded horse trailer on the Tyne, and their popularity soon led to them popping up at events and food markets further afield.

When the pandemic struck Magpye moved all sales online after setting up a local, and then national, pie delivery service during lockdown.

Now the pair have opened their very own shop within Grainger Market, which also included a new Magpye deli range and vegan butchers which consists of plant based ‘pepperoni’, ‘pastrami’, ‘ham’, ‘kebab’, cream and butter.

Magpye has adapted favourite pie fillings to plant-based and palm oil free versions, with flavours including chick’n chorizno, chick’n leek and bacun, doner kebab, vegan steak and ale, mince and onion and smoked tofu and corn chowder.

Each pie is also encased in buttery shortcrust pastry made with coconut oil.

They are also supporting other businesses in the area by stocking locally produced plant-based cheeses as well as a range of locally produced pickles and chutneys, with a view to quickly expanding the product range to include deli sandwiches.

Mrs Fryer said: “The support we have received from our local customers during the past year has been unbelievable and really given us the belief we needed to open a physical premises to complement our online pie shop.”

At a time when local high streets are struggling, they hope to buck the trend and offer something new to complement the eclectic mix of shops within the Grainger Market.

Mr Fryer added: “We are ecstatic to be able to unveil our first retail store in the heart of Newcastle city centre.

"We have developed a new range of plant-based products that we think customers will absolutely love. It’s been fantastic to welcome our first customers to what will be a unique shopping experience and a first for Newcastle.”

Vegetables are sourced locally and all other ingredients are from co-operative, ethical suppliers, with the team also using plant-based, compostable packaging.

Magpye’s vegan butter, used in the pies’ shortcrust pastry, is made with certified organic coconut oil and Scottish cold pressed rapeseed oil, and all products are free from any palm oil.

Magpye’s Plant Powered Pies, Plant Butcher & Deli is based at 66/67, Alley 2, Grainger Market, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
