Now the company is going one step further with its ethics as it gets set to go fully vegan by 2023 by reformulating its entire range of products.
The Body Shop, which is now owned by Natura & Co, has announced that it is removing ingredients such as honey and lanolin from its product range and will be a fully vegan company by the end of 2023.
There’s more good news for conscious consumers too as all of its products will be certified by The Vegan Society, making it the first global beauty brand to receive this prestigious accreditation.
The Body Shop currently has a wide range of vegan-friendly beauty products on offer such as its range of bubble baths made from food waste and its bronzing range. To make it easy for consumers to find its vegan products, The Body Shop has clearly labelled vegan sections on its website.
The Body Shop refill stations
In keeping with its eco-credentials, The Body Shop is not only going vegan but has also announced big plans to make it easier for consumers to cut down on their plastic waste by rolling out refill stations across 500 of its UK stores this year.
The global brand isn’t stopping there either as it will be rolling out a further 300 worldwide in 2022 so that customers can opt to refill their favourite products rather than purchasing them in new packaging each time.
The Body Shop currently offers a recycling scheme where customers can return their empty tubs and tubes to stores to be recycled and is extending the scheme to 800 stores in 14 markets around the world by the end of the year.
‘Vegan beauty is a critical next step’
Despite being an early champion for animal rights in the beauty sector, The Body Shop came under fire when it was purchased by L’Oreal in 2006. Many fans of the brand were disappointed by the decision and felt this went against the ethos of The Body Shop as L’Oreal refuses to adopt company-wide policies against tests on animals for its ingredients and finished products.
Since being taken over by Brazilian beauty firm Natura &Co in 2017, The Body Shop has been working hard to transition back to its roots by championing cruelty-free beauty and alternative methods to animal testing.
Speaking to Global Cosmetic News, Lionel Thoreau, Global Brand Director, The Body Shop explained: “Our decision to go 100 percent vegan is a natural next step for The Body Shop. Thanks to our founder Anita Roddick, we were the first beauty company to fight against animal testing in cosmetics, and the first major global beauty brand to use cruelty-free musk in our fragrances.
“Vegan beauty is a critical next step in our sustainability and environmental endeavours. This, along with our global refill and in-store recycling programmes makes The Body Shop a destination for ethically-minded customers.”
