Waitrose is adding nine new and improved products to its PlantLiving range as searches on Waitrose.com for vegan and convenience cooking surges.
Over the past 90 days, searches for ‘vegan ready meals’ and ‘ready meals’ have risen 31% and 30%, respectively, with recent research conducted by the upmarket retailer indicating that 46% of customers are already trying to eat, or interested in eating 30 different plants a week.
New products to the PlantLiving range include aubergine, mushroom and edamame pillows with soy and ginger, and Vietnamese style vegetable pancakes with a lime and chilli dip, which contains 11 plant varieties.
It comes as Waitrose’s PlantLiving vegetable tikka masala and rice, and smoky chilli and rice were up 17% and 5% last week versus the same time last year, and its Indian inspired Takeaway Feast has seen month-on-month sales increase of 38%.
Meanwhile at Christmas, sales of vegan festive foods soared over 200% year on year.
The grocer’s research also found that 87% of customers agreed that having the number of plant varieties on labels would help them actively try to eat 30 different plants a week.
Last month, Waitrose launched a new ‘plant varieties’ on-pack logo which looks to make it easier for customers to eat the recommended 30 plants a week.
According to the upmarket retailer, the logo represents a first for supermarket own-label products in the UK and will be appearing on over 50 new products including fresh soups, snacks and cereals this month, and added to more items throughout the year.
