Fish and chips is a classic British takeaway that many enjoy on a Friday night. But with experts predicting that we may see fishless oceans by as early as 2048, it’s time to ditch the fish and look for plant-based alternatives.
Thankfully for Manchester residents, a brand new vegan fish and chip shop has just opened its doors as JJ’s Vish and Chips has opened its second location just two years after it opened its first successful restaurant in Leeds.
The all-vegan fish and chip shop is operating as a takeaway service for now, but owner and founder Jess Jones hopes to be able to open a restaurant soon where customers can dine in.
Manchester’s newest vegan fish and chip shop boasts a menu bursting with Friday night favourites all with a fish-free twist. You’ll find everything you’d expect at a chippy such as battered sausages, fish and chips and meat-free nuggets.
In order to create realistic fish with a flaky texture and fishy taste, JJ’s Vish and Chips uses banana blossom for dishes such as scampi and calamari as well as tofu with nori sheets to replicate battered fish.
You can even indulge your sweet tooth as the chippy has a delicious dessert menu with decadent treats such as battered, deep-fried Oreos with chocolate sauce to finish off your feast.
Speaking to local news outlet Manchester Evening News, Jess said: “A lot of fish and chip shops cook their chips in beef dripping, so you can’t even get chips as a vegetarian or a vegan.
“I try to make it as like-for-like as I can as a traditional chip shop, just with a twist that there’s no meat and no fish. Our products are quite good replicas, I promise!”
