New Delhi: Bollywood stars, who earlier enjoyed meat to tickle their taste buds and nourish the body with proteins – the building blocks of life – are now turning towards veganism for various reasons. Some turn vegan for environmental reasons, others do it for their love for animals – most recently, actress Alia Bhatt turned vegan. This diet involves abstinence not just from meat but also products obtained from them – dairy most importantly. A vegan diet is all about relying on plant-based sources of food.
Going vegan has several health benefits – but most recently, a study recently uncovered its weight loss effects and we are simply impressed. At a time when people are turning to keto diet, intermittent fasting, or dry fasting diet fads to shed the extra kilos, new research suggests that going vegan could do the trick without the need for restricting daily calorie intake.
In a study by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 244 overweight participants were divided into two groups – one where some followed their normal diet and the other where they were asked to switch to a low-fat vegan diet without restricting calories. Four months later, experts noticed a dip in weight by 13 pounds specifically in those that consumed lots of legumes – these people also lost fat mass and visceral adipose tissue.
Experts concluded that in order to improve the quality of health, it is imperative to improve the quality of foods one eats – this means abstinence from animal products and eating plant-based foods like grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables.
Why is a vegan diet effective for weight loss?
A whole-food vegan diet, experts say, includes unprocessed foods rich in vitamins, minerals, fibre, water, and plant proteins. This is what makes it satiating and filling – a reason why people do not need to reduce calorie intake. The low-calorie foods also regulate hormones and have an anti-inflammatory effect on health. Additionally, they also raise body temperature during digestion so one can burn more calories in the process.
