Vegan McNuggets arrive in France

From foodservicefootprint.com

Consumers in France can now enjoy chicken-free nuggets. “The goal is to meet consumer demand for the variety of proteins on our menu,” Jean-Guillaume Bertola told Le Figaro, as he launched vegan nuggets.

The McPlant nuggets, available in boxes of four, six, nine or 20 and Happy Meals, are made from pea protein and coated in a wheat and cornflour breading. They will be priced the same as the chicken option. McDonald’s has worked on the product with Beyond Meat.

France is McDonald’s biggest market outside the US. The alternative nuggets are also available in Germany – where they have performed well, the company said. There was a side of controversy however after it emerged that preparation methods likely made them unsuitable for vegetarians or vegans.

A new McDonald’s menu is due to be launched next week in the UK but there is no sign of the nuggets as yet. McDonald’s has been offering vegan ice-cream to UK consumers as it trials and tests various options across Europe.

Beyond Meat’s McPlant Burger didn’t catch on in the US, but is reportedly thriving on this side of the Atlantic.
